Solo: A Star Wars Story has had a pretty bumpy ride, it's more than fair to say, chiefly due to the sudden firing of former directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller earlier this year.

The decision by producers to drop the pair mid-production and replace them with Ron Howard left many fans shocked, though the directors have now broken their silence on the whole saga.

"The experience of shooting the movie was wonderful," Lord said at the Vulture Festival in Los Angeles. "We had the most incredible cast and crew and collaborators.

"I think in terms of us leaving the project, I think everybody went in with really good intentions and our approach to making the movie was different than theirs. That was a really big gap to bridge, and it proved to be too big.

"Sometimes people break up, and it's really sad, and it's really disappointing, but it happens and we learned a lot from our collaborators and we're better filmmakers for it."

He added: "We're really proud of the work we did on the movie and we wish everybody the best."

Miller echoed his partner's sentiments, adding: "As Phil said, we had such a great relationship with cast and crew, we were really rooting for them.

"After we took a much-needed vacation, we got back into it and now we're writing and producing a sequel to The Lego Movie and producing a Miles Morales animated Spider-Man."

With the last minute switch in directors, rumours are abound as to exactly how much of the movie was re-shot under Howard.

Despite speculation that around 80% of Solo was re-done, star Thandie Newton rubbished these claims earlier this month.

"Apart from the initial shock and feeling bad for [Lord and Miller] not being able to finish their work, their work is everywhere in it," she said.

"Ninety percent of my stuff is with them. And it certainly wasn't about, 'Oh we have to start again and do it all over.'"

Solo: A Star Wars Story is set to be released on May 25, 2018.
