Getting stopped at airport security is every holidaymaker's worst nightmare. The stress of somebody going through your belongings and potentially throwing things away is certainly not the relaxing start to the holiday that you need.

Because of this, it's important to make yourself aware of the rules surrounding hand luggage before you head off. Most people will already be aware of the 100ml liquid restrictions, but there are a few little-known rules too that you may have never heard of.

To help out holidaymakers, the team from Fulton's Umbrellas have lifted the lid on one very surprising food item that should never be packed in your hand luggage when you're going on a trip.

The team has issued a stark warning against taking protein powder on board a plane with you. Even on holiday, this is essential for many people who are still looking to get their protein fix whilst travelling, especially if you're not sure you'll be able to buy it at your destination.

They said: "Like starting the day with a protein shake and want to take your favourite with you? Well, technically, you can, but you may wish to consider the extra hassle.

"Powders can obstruct images on X-ray machines, so they may need to be checked manually by airport security. If you’re in a hurry, it's best to pack your protein powder in your checked luggage or leave it at home."

It's not just protein powder that's best packed away in your checked luggage. Another surprising food item that you're more likely to bring back from a sunny European destination could also see you getting caught out at security, and you may be forced to put it in the bin.

Most of us know the rules around liquids in your carry-on, but some surprising items are counted as liquid and are subject to the same 100ml limit.

If you’re travelling back to the UK from within the EU, this includes soft cheese. If you were planning on bringing back your salmon and cream cheese bagel, you’d have to ensure you’ve polished it off before going through security. The same goes for jams, chutneys, sauces and anything sold in liquid like antipasti or olives. Some countries have even stricter rules when it comes to travelling with food, so always check before you pack.

While the restrictions are still in place today, they might soon become a thing of the past. New technology is being trialled across some UK airports, which could mean that the long-standing 100ml limit is lifted and passengers can carry up to two litres of liquid.
