The Handmaid's Tale star Madeline Brewer has responded to criticism that season 2 was 'too bleak'.

Moments of hope seemed to be few and far between during the second season of the politically-charged drama, leading many to believe that the series may have become too dark.

But speaking exclusively to Digital Spy, Janine actress Brewer explained her thoughts on why the show – based on Margaret Atwood's novel – isn't always an 'easy watch'.

"I was so excited to see the expansion of the world and to see the artists that are involved in The Handmaid's Tale and see their interpretation of the Colonies, which looked exactly like I pictured in my head which was insane," she said.

"But also to see more creativity from our writers, what lengths they were willing to go to to expand these characters and tell this story.

"Sometimes that's bleak, it's dark and it's not easy to watch. I've always said that we ask a lot of our viewers, we ask them to come on this journey with us and this journey is not always fun and exciting, sometimes this is hard, but that's life.

"It ebbs and flows, and I would feel that right now in the US, I don't feel like we are flowing, we are ebbing and it feels pretty bleak right now. I know I'm hopeful for the future and that's a constant theme in this show that there is hope, don't lose that hope, keep your eyes open and keep your heart alive and keep striving."

She then said that Janine will be back for season three, adding: "The girl is back and she's ready to go."

Brewer is also set to star in new Netflix webcam porn thriller Cam, which hits the streaming platform on November 16. She spoke to us about taking on the star-making role.

The Handmaid's Tale airs on Hulu in the US and Channel 4 in the UK.
