The first trailer for Black Cake, the new show from The Handmaid's Tale producer Marissa Jo Cerar, has been released.

The upcoming Disney+ drama is due to premiere later this month in the UK after airing last year on Hulu in the US, and follows a pair of siblings as they learn the truth about their late mother Eleanor.

Based on the novel by Charmaine Wilkerson, the trailer shows Byron and Benny dig deeper into their mum's past following her death thanks to a USB drive, discovering that she had a previous life in Jamaica as a girl named Covey.

"I had to protect you from the life I was forced to have," Eleanor's voice reveals, as we learn that she was married off when she was just 16, and was presumed dead or a fugitive for her husband's murder.

"In order to ensure my safety, someone would have to die," she adds, before she moves away and embarks on a life of always looking over her shoulder.

We also see Byron and Benny reflect on the weight of secrets that their mother had to keep.

The series' synopsis reads: "In the late 1960s, a runaway bride named Covey disappears into the surf off the coast of Jamaica and is feared drowned or a fugitive on the run for her husband’s murder.

"In present day California, a widow named Eleanor Bennett, loses her battle with cancer, leaving her two estranged children, Byron and Benny, a flash drive that holds previously untold stories of her journey from the Caribbean to America.

"These stories, narrated by Eleanor, shock her children and challenge everything they thought they knew about their family’s origin."
