Amazon Studios has confirmed that Hanna will be returning for a third season.

News of the action-thriller shows' renewal comes swiftly after the launch of the second season, which dropped on Amazon Prime Video on July 3.

Based on the 2011 film of the same name, Hanna follows a genetically enhanced girl (played by Esme Creed-Miles) who was raised in the forrest, evading the pursuit of a relentless CIA Agent.

Following the end of the first season, Hanna now knows she is not the only young woman with unique skills and elite training to emerge out of the Utrax programme.

In season two, she puts her own safety at risk in order to rescue her friend Clara (Yasmin Monet Prince) from the clutches of Utrax at their new facility, The Meadows. What she learns in this dangerous mission ultimately causes an existential crisis, as she questions the larger scope of Utrax.

"I'm absolutely thrilled to be able to give HANNA a third season,” said David Farr, the show's writer and executive producer, who also directed two episodes of the second season.

"When we set out on this journey, I had in my mind a drama that would excavate Hanna's past, challenge her in entirely new ways and answer the question: can she ever belong? I am truly grateful to Amazon and NBCU that we are able to continue that vision.

He added: "I am also deeply indebted to Esmé Creed-Miles and to Mireille Enos for their continuing commitment and enormous talent as we take Hanna and Marissa into new and unexplored terrain. It's going to be an exciting third act."

Hanna season 2 is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.
