Labour has won by a landslide in the 2024 General Election, and Sir Keir Starmer has all set to now step proudly into the top job.

On Thursday people flooded to polling stations to cast their vote and have their say - and now the results are on.

The Conservatives have been toppled in an almost total collapse. The party is on course for their worst result in history, losing hundreds of seats to Labour and Lib Dem candidates.

As the results came pouring in, spelling a "sobering" night for the Conservatives, Rishi Sunak conceded defeat in the early hours of Friday morning.

He said: "The Labour Party has won this General Election and I have called Keir Starmer to congratulate him on his victory."

But what happens next now the country has a new Prime Minister?

The steps to a new Prime Minister

To form a majority government, a party needs to win at least 326 seats across the country.

That threshold has been crossed, and Rishi Sunak, as leader of the Conservatives, conceded defeat in the early hours of Friday morning.

It meas Keir Starmer is now free to step into the Prime Minister role, with Labour gaining enough seats to form a government.

But there is still a few bits of red tape that need to be cut through before Starmer can step into the top job.

1. Rishi Sunak visits King Charles

The outgoing Prime Minister - Rishi Sunak - needs to visit the King and tender his resignation.

2. When will Rishi Sunak move out of 10 Downing Street

The process for moving out actually started as soon as Rishi Sunak called Keir Starmer to concede defeat - according to Mirror Online.

Modern convention dictates this phone call triggers some intense discussions over the timings of the handover between the outgoing government, the incoming party and Buckingham Palace.

The outgoing Prime Minister is expected to make way as soon as possible - usually on results day - and moving vans outside No. 10 have often been iconic memories of a PM's defeat.

It's not known yet exactly where Rishi Sunak will move to - but he won't be homeless. The couple own four different properties, with two in London, one in Yorkshire, and another in California.

3. The King meets the new Prime Minister

The incoming Prime Minister will then be invited to visit the King.

Labour party leader Keir Starmer will be King Charles III’s third PM in his two-year reign, following on the heels of Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak.

The formal audience is likely to be described in the Court Circular - the official record of royal engagements - as “kissing hands”.

According to Mirror Online, The traditional gesture of the incoming Prime Minister kissing the monarch's hands is designed to show loyalty from the politician.

Their are conflicting accounts as to whether the physical act of kissing hands actually happens in the modern age, however.

4. Official invitation

As the "kissing hands" audience takes place, the King will then invite Keir Starmer to form a government and from that point on, Starmer is officially Prime Minister.

5. Public address

Keir Starmer will then be expected to give a public address outside 10 Downing Street.
