Happy Valley last aired in 2016, so viewers have had a long wait to catch up with Lancashire's character Sergeant Catherine Cawood, who in the first two seasons was seeking vengeance on Tommy Lee Royce (Norton), the man who raped her daughter Becky and drove her to take her own life.

Finneran returns as Catherine’s sister, recovering addict Clare Cartwright.

Series three sees Catherine discover the remains of a gangland murder victim in a drained reservoir which sparks a chain of events that unwittingly leads her straight back to Tommy Lee Royce.

Her grandson Ryan - Becky's child from the rape - is now 16 and still living with Catherine, but he has ideas of his own about what kind of relationship he wants to have with the man Catherine refuses to acknowledge as his father.

Catherine is also still battling the ever-present drugs problem in the valley and is heading for retirement seemingly no closer to solving it.

Wainwright said: "It's been brilliant getting back into Catherine's world for the final series of Happy Valley. I'm looking forward hugely to seeing Sarah, James and Siobhan in Halifax for the launch in December."
