Harry Potter star Alfred Enoch is best known for playing Dean Thomas in the Wizarding World films but he's now spoken out about his special family connection to Doctor Who.

While appearing on The One Show on Thursday (November 23) night to promote his new drama series The Couple Next Door, Enoch joined in the celebrations for Doctor Who’s 60th anniversary.

Chatting to hosts Roman Kemp and Lauren Laverne, the actor revealed his dad had a prominent role in the first ever series of the iconic BBC sci-fi.

Enoch explained how his dad, William Russell, took a trip in the TARDIS alongside William Hartnell in the first episode.

"My dad was in the very first Doctor Who," he enthused, before revealing his father is now 99 years old.

Continuing to detail his father's important role on the show, Enoch described his dad as the "action man" of Doctor Who.

"He was the Doctor’s first companion because William Hartnell was an older man at the time and so they needed some kind of young action man to fight gladiators and take on Aztek champions and do all the things like that they were doing in the first season. That was my dad."

This comes as Doctor Who celebrated its birthday in style with several special treats for fans of the long-running British sci-fi series.

Throughout the day the show unveiled a collection of surprises for fans including an anniversary message from cast members old and new, as well as some first look footage of Ncuti Gatwa and Millie Gibson in action ahead of their debut episode.

Gatwa also made a surprise cameo in an updated version of An Adventure in Space and Time, as the 2013 drama was re-aired for the anniversary.

The original scene saw Matt Smith’s incarnation of the Time Lord feature in an emotional scene with the First Doctor, but now instead sees Gatwa appear in his place.

Celebrations are set to continue across the weekend as the BBC airs the first of three specials featuring David Tennant as the Fourteenth Doctor.

The upcoming trio of specials will also see Catherine Tate and the late Bernard Cribbins reprise their roles alongside some new faces, including Heartstopper star Yasmin Finney.

Doctor Who returns for three 60th anniversary specials, beginning with 'The Star Beast' on November 25. The show airs on BBC One in the UK and Disney+ elsewhere.

Classic episodes of Doctor Who are now made available via BBC iPlayer in the UK as well.
