Hawaii Placed Under Tsunami Advisory After Earthquake in Chile
Hawaii has issued a tsunami advisory after a strong earthquake in Chile on Wednesday evening. The At least five people were killed and it was felt as far away as Buenos Aires.
The National Weather Service Honolulu tweeted: "No major tsunami expected for the state. However, sea level changes and strong currents may occur."
The initial advisory was issued just after the earthquake and overnight three advisory supplements were issued by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center reiterated a major tsunami is not expected to hit Hawaii but also said to expect sea level changes and strong currents that pose a danger to swimmers, boaters and those near the shore.
The estimated time of arrival of the initial wave is 3:11 a.m. local time on Thursday. "The threat may continue for several hours after the initial wave arrival," Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said in its most recent advisory supplement.
Tsunami advisories are in effect for French Polynesia and parts of South America as well. Coquimbo, Chile experienced waves as high as 15 feet following the earthquake.
