Run spoilers follow.

Run has been cancelled by HBO after just one season.

The drama, starring Star Wars' Domhnall Gleeson and Nurse Jackie star Merritt Wever, concluded its seven-episode first season in May on a huge cliffhanger, so it seemed like a second season was inevitable – but sadly, that's not the case.

The series followed Ruby and Billy, two former lovers who once made a pact that if one of them texted the word 'Run' and the other responded, then they both drop everything and go on a train journey across America.

In the season finale twist, Ruby discovered the trip was mainly down to a book idea that Billy was writing and despite his last minute declaration of undying love, Ruby left him and went back to her unhappy marriage.

Run was written and executive produced by Phoebe Waller-Bridge's Fleabag and Killing Eve collaborator Vicky Jones. Waller-Bridge also executive produced the show and had a recurring role in the series.

"After exploring potential ways of continuing Ruby and Billy's journey, together with showrunner Vicky Jones, we have come to the decision that we will not be moving forward with a second season of Run," HBO said in a statement.

Jones told Deadline following the season one finale: "We would love, love, love to keep going and keep running. I certainly have a thousand ideas.

"At the same time it's called Run, and so the show has forward momentum. We can't just sit still in the story."
