Heartstopper season 2 just misses out on topping Netflix's most-watched list

Heartstopper season two has just missed out on taking the number one spot in Netflix's most-watched list to legal drama The Lincoln Lawyer.

Fans were finally reunited with Nick, Charlie and co on August 3 with the hit coming-of-age show's second outing, which recorded an impressive 6.1 million total views in its first week (via Netflix's Top 10 stats on Tudum).

But the gang's Parisian excursion wasn't quite enough to take the top spot in Netflix's global top 10 for English-language TV content for July 31-August 5.

The Lincoln Lawyer's second season – the second half of which also premiered on August 3 – managed to garner 6.7 million views.

Still, Hearstopper's second season has been a rousing success with glowing reviews, earning it a certified fresh rating of 96% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Although season two has only just arrived, creator Alice Oseman is already looking ahead to season three, recently teasing that the show will end up in a "new place".

"There's a lot of story left for the show to go into season three," they said. "In season two we've started to explore mental health in a big way, and I think it's pretty obvious from the way we leave the season that is going to be a big element of season three."

Oseman continued: "We're going to continue to look at that in a big way and explore how that affects Nick and Charlie's relationship, and all of the other friendships in the show.

"So people who've read volume four will have a little bit of an idea of what is coming. I'm really excited to take the show into that new place."

Heartstopper seasons 1-2 are streaming on Netflix.
