Heat health alert issued as Lancashire temperatures soar to 25C today

A yellow heat health alert has been issued by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) and Met Office for most of England today (June 24), including Lancashire, with temperatures soaring to highs of 25C.

The alert came into force on Monday morning and will remain in place until Thursday afternoon. Liam Eslick, a meteorologist at the Met Office, said Monday would see mostly dry weather with “plenty of sunny spells” and highs of up to 31C in other parts of the country.

The weather agency also says that some areas could reach heatwave thresholds as temperatures reach mid-20°Cs and above. The Met Office defines an official heatwave as at least three days where the temperature exceeds a defined temperature threshold - this thresholds starts at 25C but changes depending on where you are in the UK.

From Monday until Thursday, much of the UK will see temperatures well into the mid 20s, with some areas tipping into the low 30Cs. In Lancashire, the county will see highs of 25C on Monday with lots of sunshine before turning slightly cooler on Tuesday with highs of 22C.

The glorious sunshine will continue for the next few days before rain sweeps in on Thursday and temperatures dropping to highs of 19C. Mr Eslick said Wednesday was likely to be the warmest of the days so far with highs of 30C in the South East.

However, Thursday will likely see a breakdown in the weather with clouds and outbreaks of rain forecast across the country. The meteorologist said there was even the possibility of an “odd thunderstorm for some”.

Temperatures on Thursday are expected to remain “widely warm” with some areas seeing highs of up to 31C. Festival-goers at Glastonbury will have to wait a little longer for more clarity on the outlook for the weekend, though conditions are expected to remain unsettled as temperatures drop back to the average for June.
