Heavy Rain From Storm Elias Triggers Flooding in Central Greece

Heavy rain brought on by Storm Elias triggered severe flooding in parts of central Greece overnight into Thursday, September 28.

Footage livestreamed by Meteo Live Greece shows floodwaters in Volos, a port city in the Thessaly region, on Wednesday night. Local authorities warned that driving in the city was prohibited on Wednesday night due to the flooding.

On Thursday, Volos Mayor Achilles Beos described the flooding as a “biblical disaster” and spoke with regional officials about cleanup operations.

Storm Elias was the second bout of extreme weather Greece has faced in a matter of weeks, after Storm Daniel killed at least 17 people earlier in September. Credit: Meteo Live Greece via Storyful
