The saga of Henry Cavill's facial hair is clearly the story of the summer, and it's taken another exciting turn.

The Justice League star looks very un-Superman-like in a new Instagram photo, in which the 34-year-old superhero debuts a scruffy new look. (He's the one with the dirty blond hair, not the black hair.)

So much has been said about Cavill's facial hair throughout the summer, thanks to reports that it caused some serious problems on the set of Justice League.

Because the DC Entertainment flick required an extra round of reshoots, Henry was called away from the set of his next movie - Mission: Impossible 6 - to film some last-minute Superman action.

But because his character has a moustache in Mission: Impossible 6, Henry was forced to keep his facial hair while filming Superman - with Justice League reshoots director Joss Whedon agreeing to use CGI to erase the fuzz in post-production.

The press reports and social media speculation caused so much stir that Cavill eventually had to set the record straight on his Instagram account.

"Dear followers, it is time to finally set the record straight in this moustache fiasco," he began. "Pictured above, is not a set on MI6 but is in fact the latest in a series of weapons being designed by Warner Bros and Paramount Studios to combat the entity known as 'Henry Cavill's Moustache'.

"There has been no discussion over whether to shave or not to shave for the JL reshoots, simply a relentless campaign to put an end to the seemingly inexorable conquest of this despotic 'stache. It is not a question of IF I should shave - it is a question of how can we possibly be victorious against such a beast without bringing our own doom raining down upon us."

We quake in the presence of The Beast.
