The Queen is searching for a young artist to design the emblem for her Platinum Jubilee celebrations next year.

Buckingham Palace has launched a competition for young creatives to play their part in the 2022 event, asking for original submissions to represent the first time there has been a Platinum Jubilee.

The winner will join in many of the events over the long bank holiday weekend in 2022, and will get an invitation to attend the Platinum Party at the Palace, the BBC concert being held at Buckingham Palace in June 2022.

The competition is open to designers, illustrators and artists aged 13 to 25, and will be judged by a panel of graphic designers, visual artists and design professionals, including Margaret Calvert OBE, Lubna Chowdhary, Kerry Curtis, Yinka Ilori MBE, Gabriella Marcella and Paul Thompson, chaired by V&A museum director Tristram Hunt.

There will also be a representative from the royal household on the panel, the palace said.

The panel is looking for something which will "symbolise the very first Platinum Jubilee, marking the Queen’s 70 years as sovereign".

The winning design will be used prominently throughout the festivities, including in televised events, and street parties, and will be used on official merchandise.

It will also be used on digital and social media, the palace has said.

The competition was announced on Monday evening on The One Show on BBC One. It is open now and will close on 16 July.

There will be two rounds of judging, firstly to set a longlist of the best 100 entries, followed by a shortlist of the Top 10 from which a winner will be chosen.

All top 10 entrants will be able to join in the celebrations and their designs will feature at the V&A in June 2022.

The Queen, 95, is the first British monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee, which marks 70 years on the throne.

To celebrate the achievement, there will be an extra bank holiday in June 2022, with the late May Bank Holiday moved in order to give many people a four day weekend.

Events announced so far include Trooping the Colour, a service of thanksgiving and a concert at Buckingham Palace.

As well as the events around the central weekend, there will be a tree planting initiative across the whole country, called the Queen's Green Canopy.

The palace hopes everyone "individuals to Scout and Girlguiding groups, villages, cities, counties, schools and corporates" will plant a tree between October 2021 and the end of the 2022.

MPs and members of the House of Lords will also pay for a gift for the Queen, in keeping with previous milestones.
