BEEFEATER has confirmed that both its Herefordshire restaurants will close, with the date quickly approaching.

Earlier this year, Whitbread, the owner of Beefeater, revealed plans to close 126 of its "lower-performing" restaurants after a reduction in footfall at some locations.

A spokesperson told the Hereford Times that Beefeater restaurants in Hereford and Ross-on-Wye could be affected, and rumours began to swirl on social media that the restaurants would close in July.

Today (July 1), Whitbread has officially confirmed that the Beefeaters in Hereford and Ross-on-Wye will close their doors this week.

"After many years serving the community we can confirm the Starting Gate and Travellers Rest are closing their doors on July 5," said a spokesperson.

"We'd like to thank the local community for their support over the years and our amazing team."

In an earlier statement, when the closures were still subject to consultation, the spokesperson said: "We recognise that this will be unsettling for our team members and we are providing them with dedicated support.

"We are committed to working hard to enable as many as possible of our affected team members to stay with us by taking other vacancies across the business through recruitment."

The Hereford restaurant, called Starting Gate, is located in Holmer Road, while Ross-on-Wye's Travellers Rest is in the town's Ledbury Road, near the M50 junction. Both are attached to Premier Inn hotels, also owned by Whitbread.

Plans to run the Beefeater in Hereford as a Premier Inn restaurant for the time being have been confirmed, with it only being accessible for hotel guests.
