Here's the cast of '3 Body Problem,' Netflix's next sci-fi epic, and who they're playing
"3 Body Problem" is Netflix's next sci-fi epic, based on Liu Cixin's "Remembrance of Earth's Past" novels.
David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, and Alexander Woo are the showrunners.
Here's the cast of the show and who they're playing.
Netflix's "3 Body Problem" is the next large-scale project from "Game of Thrones" showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, along with Alexander Woo of "The Terror: Infamy."
An adaptation of Chinese author Liu Cixin's "Remembrance of Earth's Past" trilogy, "3 Body Problem" is an alien story more in the vein of Carl Sagan's "Contact" than H.G. Wells' "War of the Worlds." During the Cultural Revolution, Chinese astrophysicist Ye Wenjie makes a pivotal choice that sets humanity's course for the next four centuries: a group of aliens are on their way to Earth, and they're looking to conquer.
The Netflix adaptation remixes some characters from Liu's novel into a group of Oxford physics alums who find themselves wrapped up in the alien mystery. Other characters, like Ye Wenjie (played at different ages by breakout star Zine Tseng and Rosalind Chao) or Da Shi (Benedict Wong) are closer to their depictions in the original novel.
From Marvel stars to actors making their major series debut, here's the cast of "3 Body Problem" and who they play.
Zine Tseng plays young Ye Wenjie.
As a young woman, Ye Wenjie witnesses her father get beaten to death during a struggle session during the Cultural Revolution. She ends up making a pivotal decision that will affect everyone on Earth.
Tseng is making her debut performance in a major series in "3 Body Problem," having previously appeared in the short films "On a Whim" and "Learning English."
Rosalind Chao plays an older Ye Wenjie.
Ye Wenjie appears in the present-day continuity of the series as well, still grappling with the decision that she made years ago.
Chao recently appeared in Disney's live-action "Mulan," as well the Netflix series "Sweet Tooth." She's known for films like "The Joy Luck Club."
Eiza González plays Auggie Salazar.
Auggie is one of the "Oxford Five" who now researches nanotechnology.
González recently starred in "Ambulance," as well as other films including "Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw" and "Alita: Battle Angel." She also had a brief appearance in the recent Prime Video series "Mr. and Mrs. Smith."
Jovan Adepo plays Saul Durand.
Saul is another member of the "Oxford Five," working as a physical researcher in London.
Adepo starred in "Watchmen" (the 2019 HBO series), and recently appeared in "Babylon" and the TV adaptation of "The Stand."
Jess Hong plays Jin Cheng.
Jin, also of the "Oxford Five," is a theoretical physicist who becomes intimately involved in the alien mysteries that the show starts to unravel.
Hong previously appeared in the TV series "Inked" and "The Brokenwood Mysteries."
John Bradley plays Jack Rooney.
Jack is the member of the "Oxford Five" who's fallen the farthest away from physics, instead building a career as an entrepreneur.
Bradley will be familiar to "Game of Thrones" fans as Samwell Tarly. He's recently appeared in "Moonfall" and "North Shore."
Alex Sharp plays Will Downing.
Will is the last member of the "Oxford Five." Having fallen out of pursuing physics as a career, he works as a physics teacher.
Sharp has previously appeared in "How to Talk to Girls at Parties" and "The Trial of the Chicago 7."
Benedict Wong plays Da Shi.
Da Shi is an officer investigating the deaths of scientists around the world.
Wong will be familiar to Marvel Cinematic Universe fans as Wong, a sorcerer who first appeared in "Doctor Strange." He's also appeared in sci-fi films like "The Martian" and "Annihilation."
Liam Cunningham plays Wade.
Wade is Da Shi's superior, a mysterious man with immense power.
Cunningham is also a "Game of Thrones" alum, and played Ser Davos Seaworth. He's recently appeared in "The Last Voyage of the Demeter" and has voiced characters in "Rick and Morty" and "Solar Opposites."
Jonathan Pryce plays Mike Evans.
Evans is a reclusive billionaire and oil heir — one of great interest to Da Shi and Wade.
Pryce also appeared in "Game of Thrones," as well as series like "The Crown" and "Slow Horses."
Sea Shimooka plays Sophon.
Sophon is an avatar in the show's hyper-realistic video game VR world.
Shimooka has previously appeared in TV series including "Arrow" and "MacGyver."
Marlo Kelly plays Tatiana.
Tatiana is passionately devoted to preparing for the aliens' arrival and grew up in Evans' organization.
Kelly previously appeared in the miniseries "Joe Vs. Carole," as well as other series, including "Dare Me" and "Patricia Moore."
Saamer Usmani plays Raj Varma.
