When polls close at 10.00pm on Thursday, July 4, the night will have just begun for many working to support the election across the country.

Polling stations open at 7am and there are more than 300 polling stations in Wiltshire, where individuals will have been working from around 6.00am until just after 10.00pm.

The ballot papers will then be transported and counted at three different locations across the county.

According to Wiltshire Council, the average count role payment is around £80, starting at £12 an hour. (Image: Jessica Moriarty)

Counts for the Melksham and Devizes constituency and the South West Wiltshire constituency will be held at Trowbridge County Hall, whilst those for East Wiltshire and Salisbury will be held at Salisbury’s Five Rivers Health and Wellbeing Centre, and Chippenham votes will be counted at the town’s Olympiad Leisure Centre.

A verification is carried out to compare the number of ballot papers in the boxes against the number recorded at the polling station or at the postal vote office.

Once the ballot papers have been sorted, workers will begin to count the number of votes for each candidate.

Those working at an election are not allowed to volunteer or work on behalf of a candidate or political party, nor be related to a candidate standing at that election.

Wiltshire results are expected to be declared by around 4.00am.
