High-end retailer John Lewis has signed a deal to sell edible greetings cards for dogs made by a businesswoman from Chorley.

Scoff Paper, based at Buckshaw Village in Chorley, was set up by Gemma Connolly in 2020. Gemma, who has volunteered as a 'puppy raiser' with the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association since 2013, launched her own business after being forced to leave her high-powered job in business management consultancy when she suffered a heart attack in 2015.

Gemma got the idea for her edible greetings cards for dogs, which are made from potato peelings, when a pooch tried to eat a birthday card at a party she had attended.

Following a successful instore trial in four of its stores, John Lewis, which champions independent, British companies, is now set to stock a range of bespoke Scoff Paper edible dog cards at all of its 35 sites across the UK, as well as online.

The self proclaimed dog-friendly retailer has also commissioned an exclusive Christmas collection of edible cards for dogs.

Daylesford Organic, the high-end gift retailer, has also formed an ‘In Cahoots’ partnership with Scoff Paper, where the artwork of famous artist, Hugo Guinness, will be incorporated into a stunning set of bespoke cards.

These will be sold at the company’s six bricks and mortar stores in London and the Cotswolds, as well as online. This is the latest in a range of products from the luxury brand that feature the works of the well-known British artist and illustrator.

Gemma appeared on Dragons' Den in February where she asked investors Sara Davies, Peter Jones, Deborah Meaden, Touker Suleyman and Steven Bartlett for £50,000 in exchange for a 10 per cent equity in Scoff Paper.

Sara Davies started her offer by admitting she's "not a dog owner" but told Gemma that she "appreciates the commerciality" of Scoff Paper. "I think you've done a fantastic job and you've got a great business," the dragon said.

Touker said that he was willing to share the investment with Sara but, as Steven Bartlett made a tiger gesture in the background, Sara stood her ground and said her offer remained as it was.

Gemma said "this is really surreal" as she contemplated the two offers. She then chose to pair with Sara who came over and gave Gemma a hug.
