‘What’s up with him?’ - Roy Keane and Wayne Rooney question absent Manchester United star

Roy Keane and Wayne Rooney have raised questions over the reliability of Anthony Martial, who is set to leave Manchester United this summer.

The Frenchman waved goodbye to fans at Old Trafford following Wednesday’s 3-2 win over Newcastle, having missed the last 27 games through illness and groin surgery recovery. The striker has missed more matches than he’s played over the last three seasons.

In that period, he has sustained eight separate injuries and has sat out an astonishing 70 United fixtures, playing 58 times with just 28 of those starts. Martial will exit the club for nothing this summer with his contract expiring next month, alongside Raphael Varane, who also said his goodbyes on Tuesday.

Rooney played alongside Martial for two years before his return to Everton. Speaking on Sky Sports’ punditry panel for United’s win over Newcastle, the all-time club scorer admitted to not remembering the last time Martial played whilst Keane described his persistent injury setbacks as a major concern.

The Irishman said: "If you are constantly injured, you are no good to anybody. OK, every club will have its few injuries.

“But there are certain players in that group there you are going 'they are always injured’. You can't rely on these players to turn up week in and week out and play for Man United."

Rooney replied: "It is like Martial for instance, I have played with him. He is a very nice guy. But where has he been? I can't remember the last time I've seen him play. What's up with him?"

Keane continued: "At least his contract is up. At least that is a plus, you say 'listen, on you go'. But again it won't be easy (the rebuild). It's all well and good us sitting round here going 'he needs to go'. The reality is it's going to be really tough.”

Martial arrived at United from Monaco in 2015 for £36m, going on to win the League Cup twice, the Europa League and the FA Cup. If he returns for the final day clash with Brighton and the FA Cup final on May 25, Martial will have one final chance to build on his 90 goals and 47 assists in 317 matches.
