HMRC has finally addressed the confusion surrounding tax code changes. The tax authority took to social media to provide guidance after numerous individuals reported being incorrectly taxed for holding two jobs when, in fact, they only had one.

A Twitter user expressed their frustration: "How do i change my tax code? It's the code as if I have two jobs, I don't I have my P45 and I've just been way overtaxed," adding, "I need the money back ASAP but i work 7.30am to 6.30pm every day so I cannot ring."

They sought urgent advice: "Please advise on what to do to get this sorted ASAP."

HMRC replied, "Hi Sophie, do you have a Personal Tax Account? Thanks, Sofia."

When the individual confirmed they did, HMRC asked, "Thanks. If you log in what tax code is shown? Sofia", reports Birmingham Live.

The taxpayer responded: "BR, i was last paid from my old job 31st may, i need the tax code changed on my new job ASAP as i am struggling without the money that's been taken.," HMRC inquired further: "Thanks. Does it show the correct employer details online? Sofia."

HMRC then advised: "Thanks. You can update the estimated earnings which should generate a new code to be sent. Sofia" However, the taxpayer was still facing issues: "hi, I did this, and they've changed my tax code but still think I have 2 jobs. I have one job .. it says on there 'employment ended since 5 April 2024' but still given me a tax code of 234LX, and my current jobs new tax code is 1022TX. how do i change this so I only have ONE job."

"Thanks. I'd advise to contact the team directly in this case," HMRC responded.
