West Midlands Police said a collision took place between a motorbike, which was reported stolen, and a car just before 2pm. A man from the bike, which had failed to stop for police officers, suffered serious injuries.

Police closed off the road for ten hours and urged drivers to avoid the route. The force has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) over the incident, as it "normal procedure" in the circumstances.

In an update issued on Friday, July 5, police said the man was still in hospital and enquiries were ongoing.
