Major Holby City spoilers follow from tonight's (August 11) episode, which some readers may prefer to avoid.

Holby City aired Essie Di Lucca's final scenes tonight as she passed away on her wedding day.

The final episode before Holby's latest hiatus saw Essie and Sacha decide to bring their nuptials forward, determined not to waste more time.

Viewers know that Essie was diagnosed with terminal cancer a couple of months ago and has been making some practical preparations for the end of her life.

After making peace over baby Isla's care, Essie delighted Sacha by declaring that she wanted to marry him today, but tragedy loomed as she didn't end up making it up the aisle.

As Fletch wheeled Essie through the hospital to the chapel, he was devastated to realise that she had died peacefully in transit.

Fletch then faced the harrowing task of breaking the news to Essie's partner Sacha, who was waiting eagerly for her at the altar.

Although Sacha initially attempted to put on a brave face after learning of Essie's passing, he later broke down in Jac's arms.

Kaye Wragg's exit was confirmed last week by her former co-star Joe McFadden, who had reprised his role as Raf for her final chapter. Kaye has played the role of Essie since 2014.
