Holby City has announced that Joe McFadden will be reprising his role as Raf Di Lucca on the BBC drama for one special episode.

The news may be surprising for fans as Raf was tragically shot and killed in 2017 by Henrik Hanssen (Guy Henry)'s son Fredrik, who had targeted the hospital's staff in a terrifying shooting incident.

Raf's new appearance on the wards of Holby is a part of his widow Essie (Kaye Wragg)'s cancer storyline as she continues to struggle to come to terms with the news that her cancer is terminal.

Essie will try to search for answers from a comforting place and her thoughts will lead her to Raf, who viewers will also see on screen.

Actor Joe has said that he was delighted to make a brief return to the show, saying, "I'll always look back on my four years on Holby with such fondness as it was one of the happiest jobs I've done and it was a real pleasure to get to wear Raf's scrubs one last time in order to offer his wife Essie some guidance in such a touching episode."

Raf's appearance is due to air during an episode later in July.

McFadden, who has also been a semi-finalist on Strictly Come Dancing, said shortly after his exit from Holby that he was pleased that his final story "was brilliantly dramatic" and added that he wanted Raf's loss to be felt.

"I felt that I'd played everything Raf possibly could do," he said. "I would have hated for him to just hang around at the back of the shot, not really doing much. It's nice for him to go out on a high when he's still quite loved by the viewers. They'll hopefully feel the loss of him."

Holby City continues on Tuesday, July 14 at 8pm on BBC One.
