Hollyoaks airs drugs twist as Juliet Nightingale returns

Hollyoaks spoilers follow.

Hollyoaks aired an upsetting drugs twist for Donna-Marie Quinn during Wednesday's (April 19) first-look episode, as she struggled to cope with daughter Juliet's ongoing cancer battle.

Following her alcohol relapse at Juliet's leaving party and her rift with Romeo over his relationship with influencer Rayne, Donna has been struggling with the estrangement from her children over the past couple of weeks.

Determined to get back on her daughter's good side, Donna attempted to create a care package for Juliet while she's receiving stem cell treatment in Birmingham, calling James for help with what to include.

However, James was too preoccupied with dealing with Eric, with the lawyer losing his temper and criticising her parenting abilities.

"Let's be realistic, you haven't always been a good mother," James snapped. "Sometimes you just need to face up to who you are and be done with it."

His harsh words, as well as an earlier confrontation with Romeo and Rayne in the village, proved to be the breaking point for Donna and she fell back into old habits in order to cope.

Donna contacted former drug-dealer Harold in order to purchase some drugs as a "one off" to help with the rejection she's feeling. However, he had other ideas, telling the troubled mum he wasn't interested in money but wanted to sleep with her instead.

A distressed Donna reluctantly agreed to the deal, getting in the car and driving off with Harold.

Later on, James returned home and was horrified to discover Donna alone with the drugs — leading to an emotional confrontation between the pair.

"I can't stand it anymore," Donna sobbed. "All I can think about is ho much I've hurt the kids, I just don't want to care anymore."

"Caring is the most important part, even if it's hard," he replied.

But she was too upset to listen to his words and lunged at James for the bag, pushing it into the doorway just Juliet arrived home early to surprise everyone.

Will Donna be able to get the support she needs?
