Finn O'Connor has left Hollyoaks following a tearful encounter with John Paul McQueen.

The soap left off last week with John Paul (James Sutton) being called back to the village as part of Edward Hutchinson (Joe McGann) and Sally St Claire's (Annie Wallace) scheme to get rid of Finn.

Monday's E4 episode (December 9) featured a furious John Paul refusing to have any part in the plot against his rapist, much to the manipulative Edward's chagrin.

Another aspect of Edward's plot was seemingly working though, as Yasmine Maalik (Haiesha Mistry) chose to read the documents he'd turned over about Finn's rape trial.

With Yazz suddenly distant from Finn, Sami (Rishi Nair) and Imran (Ijaz Rana) intervened to assure him he needed to speak to her heart-to-heart about the changes he'd made in his life.

Meanwhile, John Paul reunited with his former partner James Nightingale (Gregory Finnegan), with James tempting John Paul towards considering that there may be catharsis in finally confronting Finn.

Eventually, John Paul turned up at the Hutchinson house, stunning both Finn and Diane (Alex Fletcher). Finn insisted that he'd changed using his lessons from therapy, but John Paul grew angry when Diane defended her son.

As Edward, Sally and Nancy arrived looking for John Paul, a furious Diane accused them of bullying her son — but it was actually John Paul who became the voice of reason.

Rather than join the mob against Finn, he suggested that if his rapist had truly changed his ways, he needed to start a new life away from Hollyoaks.

"Look at the pain in their eyes. Know you're still causing that," John Paul explained. "If you've truly reformed, why are you putting them through it?"

Realising John Paul was right, Finn agreed to leave. John Paul also announced that he would be returning to Singapore, but only to tie up loose ends before returning permanently.

Monday's first-look episode concluded with Diane telling Finn that she'd always love him while he slipped into a taxi out of town, with Yazz looking on.

On an ominous note, Edward watched all of this unfold as well — knowing his plan had succeeded.

He even took the money Finn left him to buy Diane a handbag and passed it off as his own present for her.
