Hollyoaks has confirmed a sad new story for Sally St Claire.

The heartbreaking storyline, which airs next week, will see Sally hiding some health problems from her son John Paul McQueen.

The week starts out with Sally struggling with back pain, before a conversation with John Paul about Hollyoaks High head-teacher Carter Shepherd's romance with Maxine Minniver. John Paul dismisses the relationship because he knows Carter is trying to deny his sexual identity, though he's caught out when Maxine overhears the conversation.

When Sally points out that John Paul may have put his job at risk, he reluctantly apologises to Carter for doubting his feelings for Maxine.

There's an alarming moment when Sharon Bailey suggests Sally tell her son about a medical appointment they'd recently had, but Sally brushes off her concern.

However, there's little choice but for Sally to open up when she's hospitalised. Carter tries to offer John Paul an olive branch by suggesting he leave work to be with Sally.

Still, Sharon notices that Sally isn't telling John Paul the truth when she suggests it'll be a few weeks before she gets the results of her hospital scan.

Away from screens, Sally actress Annie Wallace recently asked fans not to speculate on potential Hollyoaks job cuts when the show moves to a three-episode week from autumn.

"Following the news about Hollyoaks today, it would be quite nice if social media and web forums didn't rush to start 'axe list' threads," she wrote on Twitter/X. "These are people's lives... and we see you."

Hollyoaks streams first online via Channel 4 each weekday at 7.30pm. Episodes then air on E4 the following day, before getting their YouTube premiere a week after that.

Selected omnibus episodes are available via Prime Video.
