Yahoo News Hollyoaks reveals Yasmine Maalik's secret
Hollyoaks has revealed Yasmine Maalik's big secret for the first time.
The new student has been part of the show since early April, when she transferred to Hollyoaks High following some unexplained problems at her last school.
All finally became clear in Monday's E4 first look episode as Yasmine was admitted to hospital following her involvement in a dramatic car crash with the other teens.
Yasmine had left her friends in a panic when she collapsed shortly before the accident, but we now know that she has a heart condition and is awaiting a transplant.
Hollyoaks' latest episode featured the introduction of Yasmine's mum Misbah, a new consultant in emergency medicine at Dee Valley Hospital.
Misbah ensured Yasmine got the help she needed quickly from the doctors, confirming that her daughter has dilated cardiomyopathy – a condition where the heart becomes enlarged and can't pump blood efficiently.
Indiscreet Tegan Lomax also soon let the news slip to her niece Peri, explaining that Yasmine is waiting for a heart transplant and could die if she doesn't get the help she needs.
When Peri tried to support her classmate, she was shocked to hear about how Yasmine was bullied at her last school because of her condition, forcing her to leave.
Fortunately, loyal friend Peri promised to keep the secret: "Honestly, we're friends, we look out for each other. I've been that kid that people laugh at. It's not going to happen again – not to me and not to you. Trust me, your secret's safe."
We're hoping Peri keeps her promise, but with Misbah now on the scene and Yasmine's sister Farrah arriving soon too, there's sure to be interesting times ahead as the new Maalik family continue to make their mark.
Hollyoaks airs weeknights at 6.30pm on Channel 4, with first look screenings at 7pm on E4.
