Gary Lucy has revealed that Hollyoaks will be revisiting Luke Morgan's rape storyline when he returns to the show.

The Channel 4 soap explored the issue of male rape in 2000 when Luke was brutally attacked by Mark Gibbs at the end of a long-running bullying campaign.

Hollyoaks brings back Luke after a 15-year absence tonight and it's not long before we discover that he's in a bad way. Viewers will discover that he's drinking heavily and is jeopardising his rekindled relationship with Mandy Richardson.

Speaking on ITV's Loose Women today (July 21), Gary explained that Luke's troubles stem from how he's never truly moved on from the ordeal he suffered years ago.

Gary told the show's panel: "Bryan Kirkwood is the exec now. He's amazing and he's the one who called me up about the job. His idea for the story, I won't go into all of it, but it is incredible.

"Basically having not dealt with it properly and run away, how does that then impact on your life 15 years on? What happens and what sort of state are you in? To show that playing out on screen will be phenomenal.

"He's been through a lot and hopefully the audience who saw him first time round will understand why he's in this state.

"The ones that didn't see him, I hope they'll root for him and see that he has to deal with everything and live the life that he would have lived, had that event not happened in his life."

Gary was just 17 when he was asked to take on the male rape storyline, which was the first time the issue had been addressed on a British soap.

Hollyoaks aired the scenes in a late-night episode, but has since explored the topic again in the main 6.30pm show with the characters of John Paul McQueen and Finn O'Connor.

Reflecting on Luke's original storyline today, Gary recalled: "I was blown away by it. I was 17 years old. [The producer] said: 'Go home at the weekend, I want to know by Monday, speak to your mum and dad'.

"I spoke to my dad who said: 'I don't know, I don't like the idea of that'. My mum was like: 'No, you've got to do it'.

"Thankfully we did. We handled it amazingly, we had guidance counsellors and really handled it properly. We reaped the rewards for it."

Hollyoaks airs weeknights at 6.30pm on Channel 4, with first look screenings at 7pm on E4.
