Hollyoaks star David Ames teases Hannah Ashworth's return

Hollyoaks spoilers follow.

Hollyoaks star David Ames has teased Hannah Ashworth's anticipated return.

Emma Rigby reprised her role as Hannah earlier this year and quickly made an enemy of villain Carter Shepherd (Ames), after threatening to expose his conversion therapy secret.

As a result, Carter paid Hannah to leave the village, but it's since been confirmed that Rigby will return as part of the regular cast this spring.

Speaking to Inside Soap, Ames revealed how much of a threat Hannah's return could be for Carter, saying: "Hannah definitely knows way too much about things Carter desperately doesn't want to become common knowledge.

"He should be very worried by her return to the village — expect sparks to fly when she does!"

Hannah's return was originally envisaged as a guest stint, but there have been reports of Rigby's extended stay, with the actress agreeing to a long-term contract.

"She had a number of conversations with bosses and has since signed a year-long contract. Everyone is over the moon to have her back permanently," said a source from the soap.

"Bosses were so happy when she agreed to return for a few weeks so to have her back as regular cast member again is very exciting. She's got some big things coming up."

In Hannah's absence, Carter has been involved in a one-sided relationship with Maxine Minniver, who recently discovered the truth about his sexuality and feelings for John Paul McQueen. In an attempt to repair their relationship, Carter decides to propose.

"He is desperate to keep her in his life and thinks he needs to make a grand, overblown gesture, like some sort of Richard Curtis movie. Alas, life isn't like that!" said Ames on his character's impulsive decision.

"Carter gets down on one knee in the middle of the village and ends up feeling more than a little humiliated himself! It's so cringey."

Hollyoaks streams first online via Channel 4 each weekday at 7.30pm. Episodes then air on E4 the following day, before getting their YouTube premiere a week after that.
