Home and Away is planning to mark 30 years of the show with a huge, new storyline for stalwart Alf Stewart.

The Aussie soap is celebrating its 30th anniversary today (January 17) and show boss Lucy Addario has been teasing some big plots to coincide with the milestone.

Speaking to TV Tonight, Lucy said: "On screen, we have a very special story featuring the much-loved father of the show, Alf, played by Ray Meagher.

"Off screen, we will definitely be enjoying cake and celebrating this incredible milestone together."

Lucy also revealed plans to bring fostering storylines back to the forefront of the show, with some new teenage characters due to be introduced later this year.

She said: "Home and Away is centred around families and fostering is still a part of the show, as you will see later this year.

"Troubled teens still come to Summer Bay and that is such an important part of the show's history.

"It's about finding the balance of light and shade, action and comedy, drama and romance."

Home and Away airs weeknights at 1.15pm and 6pm on Channel 5.
