Australian police are investigating after a man was filmed punching an injured kangaroo as his friend looked on and laughed.
The footage, originally shared on Snapchat, shows the young man man beating the animal and boxing it in the face as it lies, helpless, on the ground.
The person filming the shocking attack can be heard egging on his friend.
The clip has sparked widespread outrage and distress on social media, with a number of users naming the alleged culprits as two teenage boys from New South Wales (NSW).
Some claimed the pair had hit the kangaroo with their car causing its back to break, as social media users branded them "scum of the earth", MailOnline reported.
It is believed the footage was filmed several months ago, but reemerged in the wake of the Australian bushfire crisis.
An estimated one billion animals have been killed since September, as the devastating blazes continue to rage across the country.
The RSPCA confirmed it had received complaints over the clip and that the incident is currently under investigation.
A spokesperson for the Australian branch of the animal charity said: "We take all allegations of animal cruelty very seriously and this matter is currently under investigation.
"Everything that RSPCA NSW can do, which is appropriate and in accordance with the law, is being done.
“Privacy and legal considerations do not allow us to provide further information at this time."
NSW police also confirmed they were aware of the video and were looking into "possible acts of animal cruelty."
The force said in a statement: “Police will not tolerate violence against animals in any capacity."
“The public are reminded not to report crime via social media.”
