A horse has died following a collision with a car in County Durham this morning.

Shortly after 5.05am, police were called to a collision on Fondlyset Lane, near Dipton. It is reported that a horse had suffered "significant injuries" after being hit by a car.

A vet attended the scene and a decision was made to euthanise the horse to prevent further suffering. The road was closed during this time.

A spokesperson for Durham Constabulary said: "Officers were called shortly after 5.05am today (April 18) to a collision in which a car had struck a horse on Fondlyset Lane, near Dipton, Stanley.

"Tragically the horse suffered significant injuries and was euthanised at the scene by a vet to prevent further suffering.

"The road was closed while officers worked at the scene."
