HotD's Emma D'Arcy condemns "vitriol" against trans community

House of the Dragon's Emma D'Arcy has reflected on violence aimed at the trans community in a new interview.

In a chat with Vogue, the star, who is non-binary, has condemned the attacks against trans and gender nonconforming people.

"We are in a scary period of contraction, especially where trans rights are concerned," they said.

"I feel so deeply sad about the vitriol levelled against trans people and gender non-conforming people."

The Rhaenyra Targaryen actor also considered the intersections of the issue, acknowledging their privilege as a white person as opposed to the discrimination faced by trans people of colour.

"I'm also incredibly aware that if I feel like this as a white non-binary person, I know how much more hostile the environment is for trans women and for trans people of colour," they said.

Following the success of the first season of House of the Dragon, D'Arcy will return in the role of Rhaenyra in a second instalment, currently in production.

This second chapter is going ahead amid the ongoing writers' strike as scripts for the new batch of episodes are already locked.

On the big screen, D'Arcy starred in Misbehaviour opposite Keira Knightley and Mothering Sunday, also featuring The Crown's Josh O'Connor.

Last November, it was announced that D'Arcy had to drop out of upcoming movie Anna due to a scheduling conflict.

The film is a biopic on the life of Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya, with D'Arcy being replaced by Naomi Battrick in the role of Anna's (Maxine Peake) daughter Vera.

House of the Dragon airs on HBO in the US, and on Sky Atlantic and NOW in the UK. Game of Thrones seasons 1-8 are available on DVD and Blu-ray.
