Houghton and Sunderland South has been held by Labour - and specifically by Bridget Phillipson - since it was created in 2010. In that general election and in 2015, the constituency was the first in the UK to be declared.

Newcastle Central has beaten it in the two subsequent elections. Boundary changes have added the St Anne’s ward to the seat, but it is not one to have seen significant alterations.

Liberal Democrat councillor Paul Edgeworth, who also fought the seat in 2017 and 2019, will be competing again while the Conservatives have selected St Chad’s councillor Chris Burnicle. Ms Philipson is one of Labour’s rising stars, having been first elected at the age of 26. She now serves as Shadow Education Secretary.
