“House of the Dragon” is just one of the countless projects delayed by 2023’s Hollywood strikes, but it also happens to be a production behemoth that requires months of postproduction and editing even under ideal circumstances. Season 2 was first announced at CCXP in Sao Paolo in December of 2023 with a teaser trailer.
Following the death of King Viserys I (Paddy Considine), an undeniable rift has grown between his daughter Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) and wife Alicent (Olivia Cooke), after their close friendship as teenagers. After skipping through the years in Season 1, the series will settle into a consistent timeline as the two women and their families descend fully into war for the Iron Throne. The 10-episode season brought in record viewership for HBO.
Co-creator Ryan Condal returns as showrunner, this time flying solo without Miguel Sapochnik, who bowed out of the role while Season 1 aired and will remain executive producer. Though the Targaryen-Velaryon clan is (mostly) done having children for the moment, the show’s cast will continue to expand, adding Clinton Liberty as Addam of Hull, Jamie Kenna as Ser Alfred Broome, Kieran Bew as Hugh, Tom Bennett as Ulf, Tom Taylor as Lord Cregan Stark, and Vincent Regan as Ser Rickard Thorne.
“House of the Dragon” premieres June 16 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on HBO and will be available to stream on Max. Check out the dual — and dueling — trailers below.
In related news, Max is finally set to roll out in Europe beginning May 21, 2024, Warner Bros. Discovery announced on Thursday. “House of the Dragon” Season 2 will debut there on June 17, one day after the U.S. premiere.
