The Fall of the House of Usher creator Mike Flanagan has assured fans that Pluto the cat lives on.

In the third episode of the Netflix series, which is based on the work of Edgar Allan Poe, fans were left in shock after Leo Usher (Rahul Kohli) brutally gutted and killed his boyfriend's black cat, Pluto.

In episode four, Leo buys a replacement lookalike cat, who eventually drives Leo mad by leaving the bloody remains of dead prey throughout the apartment. When a tormented Leo charges at the cat in an attempt to kill it, he accidentally falls to his own death.

In response to Pluto's gruesome death, Flanagan was asked on Twitter/X: "WHAT DID CATS EVER DO TO YOU?????????"

"The Black Cat was written by Edgar Allan Poe. In HIS version, a cat is killed," Flanagan replied.

"In MY version, the killing of the cat is revealed to be a hallucination. In MY version, the cat is alive and well. So who hates cats? :)"

When another fan asked when it was revealed that Pluto's death was a hallucination, Flanagan further clarified: "That's why we made such a big deal about the fact that Pluto was wearing a Gucci collar, and the new cat was not.

"Look at the cat in the final shot of the episode, who is wearing the collar... and the empty bathtub, which means ALL of the animal violence was imagined."
