An under-10s football team has made history in Huddersfield as the first all-girl team to win the Vase trophy.

The team from Woodlanders FC, based in Bradley, won the Huddersfield Junior Football League Vase trophy by beating Howden Clough 3-2 at Emley AFC's Fantastic Media Welfare Ground at Emley.

The Woodlanders had previously beaten teams from Allerton, Ossett, Warley and Mirfield to reach the final against a Howden Clough side - who sit five divisions above them. The Woodlanders are Isabella, Tia, Ellen, Ada, Bella, Violet, Ivy, Hallie, Maya, Amy and Khloe.

Parent and coach David Gilroy and club chairman Gary Kelly said everyone was very proud of the team's achievements. The team had a difficult start last season as an all-girl team in a league of boys' teams. They lost every game but didn't complain and always turned up for training and matches.

This season, with a few new players, they have only lost one game and have won their last 28 matches, gaining promotion along the way. David Gilroy said the Vase trophy win was a major achievement and showed they can play against the boys and match them. Woodlanders FC play at Fartown Pavilion in Fartown, Huddersfield, and are based at Woodlands Glade sports centre in Bradley.

Gary Kelly said: "They lost every game in their first season but they just kept going. They are really talented and we are very proud of them. David is over the moon."

Gary said he wanted to help put Fartown back on the sporting map bearing in mind its rich heritage as a base for both rugby and cricket.
