A 15-year-old boy stabbed to death in Huddersfield has been named locally as Khayri McLean.

The teenager was involved in a fight in Woodhouse Hill at 2.45pm on Wednesday, close to the entrance of North Huddersfield Trust School.

McLean was treated at the scene before being taken to Leeds General Infirmary for emergency surgery, but he was pronounced dead a short time later.

His girlfriend, Shyana James, 16, revealed that Khayri had been on his way home to change clothes and then meet her when he was attacked.

She said she was at a loss to comprehend why the 'senseless' killing took place.

Being comforted by her mother close to the murder scene, she said: "He was the best person ever. He would drop anything for you and he'd do absolutely anything for anyone.

"I spoke to him at 2.52 yesterday and he was saying he'd had a good day and couldn't wait to see me later.

"He was going home to get changed then he was going to come to mine.

"He was the love of my life. We were talking about our future the other day.

"He was just the best person I knew."

West Yorkshire Police confirmed an arrest this morning, saying in a statement: "The youth was arrested at an address in Huddersfield shortly before 5am this morning in connection with the incident in Woodhouse Hill, Fartown, yesterday afternoon.

"He remains in custody and enquiries are ongoing led by detectives from West Yorkshire Police Homicide and Major Enquiry Team."

One parent whose son goes to the school spoke of his horror at hearing about the incident.

He told YorkshireLive: "It was a scary moment when I heard there had been trouble and a teacher answered my 14-years-old son’s phone.

"I understand he may have witnessed some of what happened at about 3.15pm.

“I was asked by staff to come and collect him. I’ve heard that it all came out of nowhere."

Shyana, who has set up a fundraising page to help Khayri's family cover the cost of a funeral, was comforted by her mum, Sherrin, 33, as she visited the scene on Thursday wearing her Khayri's coat.

Sherrin said: "They were inseparable. He was always round mine and I'd drop him off at home after.

"He was a good boy, really quiet. He'd do anything for anybody ever.

"We have no idea what's provoked this, we're at a loss to understand why it's happened. We just do not know.

"There was quite a lot of kids that saw it."

A GoFundMe page set up by Shyana has reached £300 in just three hours.

Friends and classmates paid tribute to Khayri, while his school has also released a statement after the tragedy.

Charley Burrows wrote on Facebook: "I’ve no words. Just horrific. My thoughts and prayers go out to his Mum and his family. Rest in Peace Khayri."

Mourners have been going to Woodhouse Hill today where Khayri was attacked to lay flowers and tributes.

Lucy Smith wrote on a tribute: "A child taken, a family crushed. We breathe, despair, and mourn."

Sophie Vanessa said: "I can’t imagine saying goodbye to my child in the morning and then after school they have been murdered. I’m lost for words. This hurts. RIP Khayri."

Andrew Fell, head of North Huddersfield Trust School, said the incident was "truly shocking", and they opened the school at 10.30 this morning "only to students who need support".

He added in a statement: “I would urge everyone not to engage in speculation about possible causes or perpetrators and allow the police to make their enquiries...

“Our deepest sympathies go out to the pupil’s family and friends who must feel, as we do, completely devastated. They have lost a loved one and we have lost a wonderful student from our school community.”

Senior investigating officer Detective Superintendent Marc Bowes said that police have identified a number of witnesses to the incident.

“Our investigation is still at a very early stage, and we will be carrying out extensive enquiries to establish the full circumstances surrounding this incident that has resulted in the absolutely senseless loss of a young life,” he said.

“We recognise that an incident of this nature will cause understandable shock and concern in the community, and we are working closely alongside our colleagues at Kirklees District who are increasing their presence in the area to reassure people and keep them updated as our investigation progresses.

“We have already identified a number of witnesses to the incident itself but would still like to hear from anyone who has any information that could assist the investigation.”
