American chicken brand Popeyes is to open a new restaurant on Birmingham New Street. Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen has begun fitting out the former branch of Wildwood, which closed in April after seven years.

The chicken chain will be at 66 New Street and will be a neighbour to Wingstop and KFC, which occupy numbers 62 and 63 respectively. As well as chicken wings and tenders, Popeyes makes breakfast wraps and sandwiches.

Popeyes opened a delivery only kitchen in Birmingham earlier this year. The brand first came to the UK in 2021 with a store in London and it says it has plans to open 30 locations in 2024.

Popeyes says that it will launch the Birmingham location with a host of activities to celebrate, details of which are to be confirmed. There is no confirmed opening date yet, but the aim is to be up and running this summer.

Tom Crowley, CEO at Popeyes UK, said: “Following the success of our Birmingham delivery kitchen earlier this year, we're thrilled to announce that we will open the doors to our first West Midlands restaurant, in the heart of the city centre this summer.

"The New Street restaurant has been a target location for us since we landed in the UK and this opening forms part of a bigger plan for Popeyes in the West Midlands. We're looking forward to announcing further locations in the region very soon."
