Thumb-sized hornets which can kill human beings could be poised to invade Britain from across the Channel this year.

The vicious creatures are thriving in France - and are thought to have claimed at least six victims in the country with their vicious stings, which can kill allergic people.

Beekeeping experts in the UK warn that the creatures could easily hitch a lift on a caravan across the Channel - or even ride the wind to invade our country.

The Asian hornets are thought to have gained a foothold in Europe after arriving on imported Chinese plants several years ago.

They live by swarming into native bees’ hives and eating all their honey.

They have already had a devastating effect on bee populations in France.

Carolyne Liston of the Norfolk Beekeepers’ Association said, ‘They could come here on the wind.’

'They can absolutely decimate colonies and we are concerned that it is going to come in on someone's caravan who has been travelling in France.'
