Huge emergency service response after person enters water in Plymouth

There was a large emergency services presence at Sutton Harbour in the early hours of this morning (May 12) after a person went into the water. Police, the Coastguard and RNLI all raced to the scene.

A witness told PlymouthLive this morning that there had been a rescue operation at Sutton Harbour overnight due to a large number of emergency services personnel in the area. It's thought that a woman may have gone into the water.

The Coastguard has confirmed to PlymouthLive that they were called in at around 2:45am by Devon and Cornwall Police Officers to help search for a person who may be in the water. Rescue teams from Plymouth and Yealm rushed to the scene and a Plymouth RNLI lifeboat was also sent out.

A spokesperson for HM Coastguard said: "HM Coastguard assisted Devon and Cornwall Police following reports of a person possibly in the water in the Sutton Harbour area, Plymouth. Alerted at around 2.45am today (12 May), Coastguard Rescue Teams from Plymouth and Yealm and the inshore lifeboat from Plymouth RNLI were sent to the scene."

The precise nature of the incident is still yet to be confirmed. It is not yet known if the person was recovered from the water or what condition they are in.
