Hull FC land double overseas swoop as John Cartwright makes first signings

Hull FC have completed deals for overseas duo Treigh Stewart and Jed Cartwright. The pair are set for imminent arrivals ahead of the second half of the 2024 season and are currently going through the visa process.

Hull Live reported over the weekend that the club had intensified their overseas search now that John Cartwright is in place to take over as head coach for the 2025 season and beyond. The 58-year-old, who is now in daily contact with Richie Myler, will have a big say on overseas talent and is understood to have recommended both Stewart, a Papua New Guinean full-back, and Cartwright, a back-rower who is also his son, to the club.

The players will fill the quota spots left following the departures of Tex Hoy and Fa’amanu Brown back in April, with the hope that both talents will arrive in time for next Saturday’s game against Leeds Rhinos at the MKM Stadium.

Set to add some welcome competition and further quality to the squad, Stewart was first reported to have held talks with the club last week. Currently playing for Brisbane Tigers in the Queensland Cup, he is a Papua New Guinean full-back who lined up against the Australian Prime Minister's XIII last year. He is 23-years old and has also spent time playing for St George Illawarra Dragons in the New South Wales Cup.

Cartwright, a towering back rower who stands at 6 foot 4, came through the Penrith Panthers system like his father before him. He is the more experienced of the two players, having played over 30 games in the NRL.

The now-27-year-old left Penrith to join South Sydney Rabbitohs in 2020. He signed for Newcastle Knights this year, with Hull now moving to secure the Australian forward, as well as Stewart, for the rest of the 2024 season and beyond.

The players, who it is hoped will give a significant boost to the side as they look for their first win in three months, will be the fourth and fifth new recruits that Hull have made mid-season, with Tom Briscoe and Yusuf Aydin signed from Leigh Leopards and Hull KR. Ben Reynolds has also joined on a season-long loan from the Robins, with the likes of John Asiata signed for next year alongside Jordan Abdull, Amir Bourouh, Zak Hardaker, and Oliver Holmes.
