The owner of a property in Hull has been prosecuted by Hull City Council for failing to deal with the condition of their land.

Action was taken by the council’s environmental enforcement officers, in response to complaints from members of the public. On hearing evidence, Hull Magistrates’ Court proved the owner, Lynn Fish, of Doncaster Street, Hull, guilty in her absence.

The case resulted in fines and costs totalling £1,413 and a criminal record for Fish. The council has now warned other property owners and occupiers to maintain the cleanliness of their land, to avoid facing similar prosecution.

Doug Sharp, head of street cleansing and waste management at Hull City Council, said: “This successful prosecution demonstrates that we do not take these offences lightly and that we will always listen and respond to complaints from the public about untidy land. Occupiers and property owners must take responsibility for any waste on their land as it blights neighbourhoods and is unfair on other residents.

“We will continue to ensure that there are consequences for failing to take responsibility.” The council urges residents to dispose of or recycle their household waste through approved services – including any of the city’s waste and recycling centres, household collection schemes, and bulky household collection services.
