Human remains found off FM 346 East in Smith County, foul play suspected

SMITH COUNTY, Texas (KETK) – Human remains were found on an oil well service road near Troup on Sunday, according to authorities.

Officials with the Smith County Sheriff’s Office said they received a call around 3:40 p.m. where the caller indicated human remains may have been located in the area of the 15400 block of FM 346 East, between Troup and Whitehouse.

Deputies arrived at the scene where they reported to observe human remains about 100 yards off FM 346.

Authorities said the body has not yet been identified, and the remains were taken to the Southwest Institute of Forensic Sciences in Dallas where an autopsy has been ordered. Foul play is suspected, the sheriff’s office confirmed.

“This investigation continues and investigators are confident in having investigative leads to follow which will ultimately lead to the identity of the suspect[s,]” officials said. “This continues to be an active investigation.”
