PEOPLE from all over Inverclyde and beyond did the Port proud when they gathered together for the 2024 Comet Festival.

This year's free event at Coronation Park was organised by the Comet Festival Committee with support from Inverclyde Council, and was once again part of the Meliora Festival.

Gala king and queen Aaron Arthur and Oluwafikayomi Tafa took centre stage on the day and enjoyed representing their schools, Newark and St Michael's.

Aaron and Oluwafikayomi were chosen as festival royalty after winning a competition to design a badge for the 250th anniversary of Port Glasgow which will be celebrated next year.

Provost Drew McKenzie welcomed the king and queen to the event.

The exciting day of events started at 11.30am and ran right through until 6pm.

Talented performers took to the stage throughout the day and gave the crowd a chance to have a good singalong.

Young footballers showed off their skills in a series of striking events, and there was an amazing selection of activities for the kids.

The fantastic food and drink tents, and the ice cream van, were as popular as ever, and people of all ages enjoyed the fun-packed funfair.

People were able to browse a wide range of stalls, and the face painter was on-hand to create beautiful designs for everyone.

Salvation Army members had a great day at the festival and raised £1,400 from the tea tent.

Crochet group Sling Your Hook also pitched in to help with the fundraising.

Captain Ian Arthur said that as well as raising funds for their work in the community, it was important that the Salvation Army was taking part in community celebrations.

He said: "Port folk never cease to amaze me with their generosity and this amount is actually higher than last year.

"This will enable us to continue the good work we do in the community such as our Friday morning drop-ins."
