Hurricane Ian: Rescue efforts continue in Florida as storm makes landfall in South Carolina

Across southwest Florida, rescue efforts continue in search of residents stranded by Hurricane Ian. Due to extensive damage to the Sanibel Causeway, which connects multiple island communities to the mainland, air support has been widely deployed in recovery missions. Meanwhile, Ian continues north, making landfall in South Carolina on Friday afternoon.

RON DESANTIS: Rescue personnel have gone to more than 3,000 homes in the hardest-hit areas, going door-to-door to check on the occupants of those residences.

Of course, there were damage to some of our infrastructure, particularly the Sanibel Causeway. There were breaks in that in multiple different areas. That's the only way on Sanibel and Captiva Island, so the operations to help people there have been mostly by air.

I think that there's going to be issues with being on some of those islands because they're not going to have services like we expect for quite some time, given the limitations of transportation.
