Iain Lee has explained why he fibbed about the Strictly Come Dancing lineup on Good Morning Britain on Wednesday 31 July, ahead of The One Show’s official reveal later that same evening.

“GMB told me to say it. That is how TV works,” the broadcaster and writer clarified on Twitter, claiming the ‘slip-up’ was all orchestrated. "You think I personally found [out] then decided to blab the Strictly dancers?”

Lee had told GMB hosts Charlotte Hawkins, Ben Shephard and Kate Garraway - and of course, ITV viewers too - that the BBC teatime show was set to reveal that Anneka Rice, Jamie Laing and Sam Allardyce would be taking part in the 2019 series. But the trio actually turned out to be Emma Barton, Chris Ramsey and David James.

“The pictures they put up on screen...? They just happened to have them on standby by coincidence? And no, I'm not a serious radio host. I'm very silly,” he continued on social media.

“It’s not like I'd been up all night researching. You knew that, you're not that thick are you?”

Although, it appears as if the former I’m A Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! contestant hasn’t finished winding fans of the BBC dance competition up.

The 46-year-old - who is standing in for entertainment reporter Richard Arnold is away - appeared on GMB again this morning to suggest that the “sneaky” One Show “flipped” their planned announcement after they realised he “got those predictions right.”

“I got so much abuse on Twitter and my radio show last night because I'd said who'd be on Strictly! Those three are still definitely going in,” he added, before joking: “So is Sarah Beeny, so is 50 Cent and so is Halle Berry.”
