In January, Ice Spice confirmed that she’d nearly finished recording her forthcoming album, which is inspired by her Jan. 1, 2000 birthdate, during an appearance on TODAY. “Yes, there’s going to be an album this year,” she announced along with the Y2K title. “It’s almost finished, so I’m really excited.”

At the time, the “Barbie World” rap star didn’t elaborate too much on details but shared that she “of course” has some collaborations on the record.

“I have a crazy collaboration that just got locked in, like, two days ago,” she teased, playfully rolling her Rs on “crazy” for emphasis.

Ice Spice dropped the first hint about Y2K back in November when she posted photos of herself on Instagram showing off a lower back tattoo. “Y2K! ?/?/24,” she captioned the post.

Since then, the Taylor Swift and Nicki Minaj collaborator has dropped breadcrumbs of what fans can expect to hear on her forthcoming album with singles like “Think U the S— (Fart)” and “Gimme a Light,” the latter of which the rapper premiered during her debut Coachella performance in April.

Speaking to Apple Music’s Zane Lowe about the song last month, Ice Spice admitted she was “nervous” about putting out the RIOTUSA-produced single, which samples Sean Paul’s 2002 hit of the same name, because of how “iconic” the original is.

“You know Sean Paul, he’s legendary, and that song alone, his ‘Gimme the Light,’ is so iconic, I was so nervous to sample it,” the rapper shared, “‘cause I’m like, ‘This isn’t going to get cleared, so what’s the point?’”

Thankfully, she said the track did get cleared, and she’s grateful because “we really wanted to have a very authentic Y2K sample” featured on the new album.

According to FOX 5 New York, Ice Spice commemorated her album’s rollout last month by selling 50,000 Ice Spice MetroCards across N.Y.C. They were made available at subway stations located in the Bronx and Manhattan.

Recently, Ice Spice hopped on the remix of Cobain’s hit song “Fisherrr" featuring Bay Swag. The trio also put out a music video for the track set in her native New York City.

Following the release of her debut album, Ice Spice will appear in Spike Lee's next film, a reinterpretation of Akira Kurosawa's 1963 thriller High and Low starring Denzel Washington.
