A new food superstore is opening in Plymouth tomorrow in a unit vacated when Mothercare closed nearly five years ago. The Food Warehouse will start trading at the £23m Gateway Retail Park, at Marsh Mills.

The outlet is a new offering from Iceland Foods which is extending the retailer’s products into warehouse spaces so that customers can buy in bulk. The new store opens on Tuesday, June 18, creating about 23 jobs.

To celebrate the store opening, Iceland will be giving away £1,000 worth of Iceland vouchers to the first 100 customers in the queue, plus a 1.2kg tub of Jellybeans to the first 200 customers through the checkouts. Iceland already has four stores in Plymouth: in Mayflower Street in the city centre, In Devonport, Plymstock and Plympton, plus two inside The Range stores at Derriford and Peverell.

Kristian Barrett, group retail director at Iceland Foods, said: “We’re very excited to be opening our new Plymouth store, ensuring even more local residents can get their hands on market-leading deals, alongside a brilliant range of frozen, grocery and fresh foods. We’re hard at work getting everything set up and ready to go and we can’t wait to open our doors to the local community.”

The Food Warehouse was introduced in 2014, with stores often double the size of traditional Iceland stores, offering a much larger range of goods, and bigger packs for better value. The stores are designed to look like a warehouse, with wide shopping aisles and large spaces.

The new The Food Warehouse store in Plymouth is opening in the unit vacated when Mothercare collapsed in late 2019. The baby clothes seller had only opened in the newly-built retail park in November 2018.

When the Food Warehouse opens it will offer multi-buy deals, such as three for £3, three for £5 and three for £10 deals, alongside exclusive Food Warehouse ranges such as Slimming World, Cathedral City, TGI Fridays and more. The store opening also coincides with Iceland’s 10% discount for all customers aged over 60, available every Tuesday across stores. Customers can find out information about further offers from Iceland on the Bonus Card app.

The Plymouth store will be open Monday to Saturday from Monday to Saturday 8am to 8pm, and Sunday from 10am to 4pm. For one day only, The new Food Warehouse will have seven deals available to customers across the store.

Anyone attending on opening day can make the most of the following one-off deals:

  • Pepsi Max Cans - 24 pack, £7 – was £10

  • Velvet Classic Quilted Toilet Tissue - 24 pack, £5 – was £8.50

Every customer in the queue before 7.45am on the opening day will also be given a raffle ticket which will enter them into a free prize draw. Three winners will be drawn and given the chance to take part in a supermarket sweep-style challenge where they’ll each have the entire store to themselves for 90 seconds and will get to fill their trolley with whatever they’d like.

Additional prizes up for grabs include three Tower Panini Makers, two Tower Slow Cookers and two Tower four-litre Air Fryers. Customers will also be invited to guess how many sweets are in the jar for a chance to win a free Daewoo Double Drawer Air Fryer.
